The 2017 Florida Championship winners were Mischa Freystoetter and Rie Takano from Florida. They won a trip to Finland to represent Florida in the Wife Carrying World Championships in Sonkajärvi, Finland! The silver went to Finland’s Taisto Miettinen and Nyssa Estremera from West Palm Beach. The bronze went to Sean Leflock and Laura Canteri from Boynton Beach. Mark and Raakel Puustelli put up a great effort and came in fourth.
A water obstacle is a required part of Wife Carrying Competitions. It may look like these competitors are just having fun, but wait until you see them live and in action – these teams are GOOD!
Lightweight Wives for Rent!
Team members are not required to be legally married.
Check at the Midnight Sun Festival Info Tent to find a lightweight “wife” for rent!
(Note: Wives under 108 lbs. will be given sandbags to carry to bring their weight up to 108 lbs.)
Team members must both be at least 18 years old.
The length of the course is approx. 280 yards.
The course contains two “log” obstacles and a “widow maker” water hazard.
There is no restriction on how the Wife is carried. If a Husband drops his Wife, the Husband must pick up his Wife before attempting to advance down the course.
Teams run the course two Teams per Heat, with each Team being timed. The four overall fastest Teams qualify for the Medal Round. Since entry into the Medal Round is determined by the four overall fastest times, Teams do not have to win their initial Heat to qualify for the Medal Round, nor does winning your initial Heat guarantee entry into the Medal Round.

The winning team will receive a one-week trip to Finland to represent Florida in the Wife Carrying World Championships in Sonkajärvi, Finland, end of June, 2018.
The 2nd and 3rd place teams will receive Medals and consolation prizes.
WIFE CARRYING HISTORY
Wife Carrying originated in Finland during the 1800’s. The first modern Wife Carrying Competition was held in Finland in 1992.
North American Wife Carrying Competitions
Thirteen states and two Canadian provinces presently hold Wife Carrying Contests. The North American Wife Carrying Championships are held every October at the Sunday River Resort in Maine.

Wife Carrying World Championships
The Wife Carrying World Championships are held annually in Sonkajärvi, Finland at the end of June.
Contestants from other countries have participated since 1995.
Top competitors in the North American Wife Carrying Championship have placed fourth in the World Championships 2017 in Finland while Florida’s Micha and Rie Freystaeter took silver! Taisto Miettinen and Kristiina Haapanen (Kelly video) of Finland took the gold!
The Florida Championship Wife Carrying Contest is sanctioned by the Sunday River Resort, the organizer of the North American Wife Carrying Championship and the sanctioning body for the sport in the U.S. and Canada.
